Martin Wins “Invest in Others Global Impact Award” for Work with Be Like Brit

Monday, October 12, 2020

Michael Martin

Michael J. Martin, Managing Director and Senior Vice President, Investments for ELM Wealth Management at Raymond James in Worcester, won the 2020 Invest in Others Global Impact Award, one of five awards presented as part of the 14th Annual Invest in Others Awards.

Martin earned the honor for his charitable work with Be Like Brit, which received a $45,000 donation from the Invest in Others Charitable Foundation.

The Invest in Others Awards program recognizes the charitable work of financial advisors in communities across the country and around the world. The Global Impact Award is presented annually to a financial advisor who has made a lasting impact on a community in another country by actively serving as a volunteer for at least three years with a charity whose primary mission is to help those who live outside the United States. Winners are selected based on their leadership, dedication, contribution, inspiration, and impact on a nonprofit and the community it serves.

Be Like Brit serves the children of Haiti by providing a safe, nurturing home rooted in the virtues of faith, hope and love while developing a sense of social responsibility, community involvement and unconditional love. In addition to serving many Haitian orphans, Be Like Brit is also the largest employer in Grand Goave, supporting many local families. Be Like Brit was founded by Len and Cherylann Gengel to commemorate the life of their daughter, Britney Gengel, who died tragically in the 2010 earthquake that killed 300,000 people in Haiti.

The organization has won a number of awards from GoLocalWorcester.

Martin says he started working with the organization during its early inception and was present in Haiti for the dedication of the “Brit’s Home” orphanage in January 2013. In addition to personally sponsoring a child and securing donations from his firm, Michael has participated in annual “Britsionary” trips to Haiti since 2016. His first trip was in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, where he contributed to home rebuilding efforts. His trips to Haiti have continued annually and he has forged meaningful, lasting relationships with children and staff alike at Brit’s Home.
