Fit for Life: Destroy, Kill & Eliminate to Reach Success

Saturday, March 14, 2020

Matt Espeut

One of our rockstar coaches was delivering his live “tip of the week” last Friday, and he said something impactful to our members. He said that everybody knows what to do, and we totally understand that it’s hard to find the discipline to get here, but once you finish that workout, you leave with a sense of accomplishment.

Finding success usually isn’t a matter of know-how, it’s a matter of just applying the information we already know and executing a plan to become more disciplined to do what needs to be done as opposed to what you want to do.

I saw a member holding back last Saturday and when I encouraged her to keep at it, she replied “I can’t”, but I stayed on her until she did. Then I replied, “it’s not that you couldn’t do it, you just didn’t want to do it.” She laughed then agreed with me.

Everybody knows that they shouldn’t eat sugar processed food and all kinds of junk food, however we still do it anyway.

Everybody knows in order to be healthy you need to exercise regularly yet not many of us do it enough.

Everybody knows that to be successful in business it takes time and effort and a lot of hard work, but nobody is willing to do it.

So, in theory you know exactly what to do and you know exactly how to do it so why aren’t we all doing it?

Because it’s a matter of the habits we incorporate that prevent us from being high performers, and lack of discipline prevents most of us from reaching our goals. If it were easy, everyone would be a millionaire with six pack abs, but that status is only reserved for the few that will go above and beyond to accomplish it.

I personally know that in order to reach the next level in business there are habits that I need to start incorporating, and there are habits that I need to stop doing. It’s a work in progress, and I am self-aware of what needs to be done, so I take steps, change routines, and try to instill methods that will help me move closer to my goal.

Yes, it’s overwhelming to us busy people to be constantly adding more tasks to our plate, however if we can focus on letting go of some bad habits that prevent us from moving forward, we can free up some of that time to be productive.

I was listening to a podcast the other day and the title was “10 tips on how to be more disciplined so you can become a high performer.”

Here are a few of the key takeaways that will help us become more disciplined in our everyday lives:

Destroy distractions and toss the temptations: Get rid of the unessential time sucks.

If you eat too many potato chips at night or if you have trouble avoiding alcohol, stop keeping it in the house. Eliminate the possibility of making mistakes. If you have these items in plain sight, it’s harder to avoid. If they are locked in a cabinet, it makes it harder to indulge. If they are not in the house, it’s impossible to indulge.

The same goes for distractions when you work. You need to control your local environment and understand that everything in arms reach is a distraction. Personally, I can’t get anything done at work when sessions are going on unless I shut my door and pull down the blind.

I am in the people business, so I enjoy talking with my members, however, that distracts me from the work I need to get done. Therefore, I get all my focus work done at home, in a coffee shop or at the gym before people arrive & when everyone leaves for the night. That way I can still socialize with members and be productive with my tasks.

If you find yourself getting sucked into mindlessly surfing social media or the internet, put your phone face down, or better yet, place it in a drawer in another room. That will eliminate the biggest distraction in the workplace, and you will be more focused on the important tasks.

Public accountability. Tell someone else or a support group about your goals.

This is what makes Providence Fit Body Boot Camp the best at helping its members achieve great results & accomplish goals.

  • We have a goal board hanging in the gym for folks to write out their short-term goals.
  • We do personal nutrition consults where we talk about your goals.
  • We encourage you get a battle buddy to keep you accountable.
  • We have a private community Facebook group that we encourage engagement in, as well as many other ways to promote public accountability.
  • We also make a big deal when someone reaches a milestone or accomplishes their goals, so everyone can see that it can be done!!

If you say something in public, and you don’t follow through, you will feel like a hypocrite, and that’s something none of us want to feel like. Remember, if you tell someone that you are going to the gym 4 times next week, and they ask you about it, you will either say with pride that you went, lie to them if you didn’t go, or feel like crap telling them you failed.

The power of public accountability will make you more likely to go so you can avoid lying or feeling like a failure.

Be prepared and systematic with trying to accomplish your goals.

If your goal is to hit the gym in the am, get your bag ready the night before.

If you need to bring your lunch to work the next day to avoid eating junk, get it ready the night before.

If you have a report due or some other work tasks, put them on your list first, and create a clear path to accomplishing your goals.

Make time for what matters instead of trying to find the time the later in the day. Plan the night before, add the important items to your calendar, and set specific goals for yourself. Instead of saying, “I’ll get to it tomorrow”, say “I’ll get to it at 10:30 tomorrow”, and your likelihood of success skyrockets.

Take immediate action and take steps towards your goals quickly. Success loves speed.

If you say you want to start an exercise program next week, make a commitment by joining the gym immediately, or go out and spend money on workout clothes. If you wait too long or put off your goals, they are unlikely to happen.

Procrastination is the killer of dreams. Stop saying, tomorrow, next time, and I need to.

Just get started, and results will build momentum.

Lean into and do the things that scare or intimidate you first.

If you save the difficult things for later, they will unlikely get done.

I hate making sales calls but that is the only way my business succeeds, so I have a goal of 10 calls daily, and since I can’t do that first thing in the am, I make it a point to stay at work until it gets accomplished. Once I get to number 3 and get in a groove, it gets a whole lot easier, and most of the time I exceed my goal of 10.

If you hate training legs, do them on Monday. If you hate working out altogether, join Providence Fit Body Boot Camp so we can help you through your struggles by providing a fun experience.

Complete the things you hate first. Pushing the broccoli around on your plate when you were a kid didn’t get you out of eating it, you just prolonged your own misery.

We as humans have the instincts to procrastinate, push hard tasks to the back burner, and wait until the time feels right to start something that will put us on the path to success.

We all do it. Even successful people have bad habits and obstacles that slow down the process. What separates them from the rest, is that they have self-awareness, bounce back ability and are capable of changing their habits for the better.

So, in conclusion, don’t add more tasks to an already busy schedule, eliminate the distractions that hold you back, be more disciplined with your good habits, and share your goals with an accountability buddy.

We all have the potential to reach success, we just need to follow our GPS to find the best route to get there.
