Becker College and Tech School in Ireland Team Up for Summer Gaming Internship

“We’re very excited about the summer,” says Timothy Loew, executive director of MassDiGI, “Games are a global business so it only makes sense that our internship program be global too.”
Over the past three years, MassDiGI has hired students from the U.S. to work as interns in its highly competitive Summer Innovation Program (SIP) and this year marks the first time that the company is welcoming two international students from LYIT.
SIP begins on May 19 and runs until August 7. Over the course of 12 weeks, teams of interns will be responsible for working towards successfully launch their own games. SIP students will receive housing courtesy of Becker College as well as a modest stipend.
“There is no opportunity like SIP anywhere else in the world,” said Dr. Robert E. Johnson, president of Becker College. “I can’t wait to see what these talented students come up with.”
The relationship between MassDiGI and LYIT was prompted by the work of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and is the most recent announcement regarding partnerships between County Donegal and Central Massachusetts including Worcester State University’s recent nursing student exchange program.
“Educational partnerships, be it games or nursing, are valuable in strengthening Worcester’s international ties,” says Timothy Murray, president and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce. “The more we can connect young people to opportunities here, the better.”
According to MassDiGI, this year the summer program received applications from 214 undergraduate and graduate students representing 55 colleges and universities from across the world. However, the program only accepts 24 interns and this year they come from 15 institutions including Becker College, Berklee College of Music, Brandeis University, Champlain College, Hampshire College, IUPUI, MIT, Northeastern University, RPI, RISD, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, University of Southern Maine, WPI – and LYIT.
“Letterkenny Institute of Technology is delighted that our students are getting the opportunity to participate in MassDiGi,” says Paul Hannigan, President of LYIT. “Having seen first-hand the energy that this program generates we appreciate that our students can experience this and benefit from its outcomes. We also see this as an important building block in our relation with Central Massachusetts.”
