Fit for Life: We Are All in This Together

Saturday, March 21, 2020

Matt Espeut

I am not one to let fear control me or force me to make rash decisions.

Do I get concerned about things? Yes.

Have I experienced anxiety and depression at times throughout my life? Absolutely.

However, with this latest epidemic, I am seeing people run around in fear, uncertainty, and a state of anxiety.

There are also some people that have zero consideration as to what’s going on, are ignorant to the caliber of this situation, and are contributing to the problem as opposed to the solution.

I closed my gym after the last session on Monday night, not out of fear but out of consideration for my members and the community.

Yes, I wanted to continue to hold sessions and give my members a sanctuary to come to and get away from the hysteria for 30 minutes of their day, however after careful thought and consideration, I realized that staying open was a disservice to my members.

By staying open and conducting group sessions, I was encouraging people to expose themselves and be at a higher risk to contract the Corona Virus.

I saw some businesses on the news that are defying the countrywide shut down and staying open.

I am here to tell you; nothing can be more selfish and irresponsible than encouraging and offering a place for people to congregate.

Do your part!

I know it’s tough to close your business and lose the income, however the sooner we get everyone to comply, the sooner we can get back to business at a somewhat “normal” level.

This thing is spreading rapidly, and it’s up to us to stop it.

STOP waiting for the government to come in and save you, because it’s not going to happen. It's going to take a full-blown effort from all of us.

Don’t be part of the problem, become part of the solution.

I understand that we need to keep up our cupboards full and stock up on necessary supplies, but it is important that we stay away from non-essential gatherings of people.

In other words, stay home and away from people unless it is absolutely necessary.

Don’t get me wrong, exercising IS essential, and that’s the reason we have made provisions for our members and are staying engaged with them, so they stick to their routine.

Now more than ever you must make your health a top priority.

There is ample scientific proof that four things are necessary to support a strong and healthy immune system, to reduce stress and to keep a positive mindset in the face of adversity:

    1.    You MUST exercise.

    2.    You MUST eat a nutritious diet.

    3.    You MUST devote yourself to personal growth

    4.    You need adequate sleep.

In addition to taking care of yourselves physically, start working on taking care of yourself mentally, emotionally and financially.

Mentally, you need to stay positive. We have been through worse before, so we will make it through this.

Focus on listening or reading uplifting content. Limit your exposure to the news. Get the updates and turn the channel.

Read a good motivational self-help book, or find some great podcasts to download, and don’t let all the negative content out there mess with your head.

Financially, we are on our own. We need to seek other options if this continues for a long period of time.

The economy WILL crash, so stop hoping it won’t.

Be realistic and figure out other means of survival, and different avenues you can take with your livelihood, like enhance your services to your existing customers and step up your communication.

You basically have 2 choices, you can lose it, or you can battle and create opportunity.

Opportunity to help people through a tough time, and an opportunity to strengthen our community.

You can either become a liability, act irrationally, and give up, or you can become an asset and be there for your people.

Emotionally, we can’t overreact, and need to consider focusing on these 3 C’s

Control what you can. Things like your health, thoughts, and actions are all on you. These are things that only you can control, and it would be a wise decision to focus on enhancing all three on a positive level.

Cope with what you can’t. Nobody wants to be home all day, so use the time wisely and take advantage of the opportunity. Get some rest, read, finish a project. Do what it takes in order to make productive use of your time.

Concentrate on what counts. Are you still healthy, is your family and friends? Then focus on staying that way. Reach out to people, stay on point with your health, and focus on a plan to rebuild yourself stronger when this is over.

We are all in this together, so stay proactive in being part of the solution.

Be an asset to your community and everyone around you and avoid being a liability.

The sooner we all bond together and do our part, the sooner life will get back on track.

Committed to your health, and success,
