“Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong” - Worcester Library

Saturday, September 19, 2020

The Worcester Public Library invites the public to participate in a discussion on the award-winning book, “Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong” by James W. Loewen.

The presentation will be moderated by Stephanie Williams, Cultural Humility Practitioner, and will take place on Saturday, September 26 at 11 a.m. The program will be held virtually over Zoom, and registration is required at: https://tinyurl.com/liesbookdiscussion.

Selling nearly two million copies, the book won an American Book Award and the Oliver Cromwell Cox Award for Distinguished Anti-Racist Scholarship.

According to the WPL, the presentation is "thought provoking, nonpartisan, and often shocking, Loewen unveils the real America in this classic beloved by high school teachers, history buffs, and enlightened citizens across the country."

“We are excited to provide community space to have safe and respectful dialogues on important topics such as those presented in Loewen’s book. This was my first read through of Lies My Teacher Told Me and I look forward to discussing it with other readers to hear their thoughts and reactions.” Jennifer Marien, Public Services Librarian

Stephanie Williams is a native of Worcester, MA. She previously served as the Director of Multicultural Affairs at Anna Maria College and Multicultural Affairs Liaison at Becker College for several years, where she provided visual leadership and strategic direction around disrupting “business as usual” to achieve social change, developing new approaches to educational and engagement around diversity and inclusion, multiculturalism, and social justice. Her demonstrated success led her to a career in state government where she has spent the last five years utilizing her MBA, working with marginalized populations in areas such as financial stability, economic self-sufficiency and personal growth.
