2010 RISE Fashion Show Preview

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Fashionistas, mark your calendars for this Saturday night.

It's one of the best fashion shows, because it's real Rhode Islanders, they take to the catwalk, and they raise funds for one of the best causes around.

RISE, Rhode Islanders Sponsoring Education, supports children of incarcerated parents in RI with mentoring and scholarships to break what Brown University physicians Dr. Timothy Flanigan and Dr. Kevin Vigilante had identified as an intergenerational socio-medical syndrome.

Symptoms like poverty, under-education, joblessness, homelessness, sexual abuse, teen pregnancy, depression, among other factors including incarceration and premature death were passing along from generation to generation. The work done by RISE focuses on research that shows that educational opportunities and mentoring have the potential to break the cycle.

Since 1997, RISE has supplied services to children of women in incarceration, and in 2004, the mission broadened to include children with a father who'd been incarcerated.

There's never been a better reason to walk a catwalk. Or watch your fellow (brave) RIers do so. Get your ticket before it's sold out.

2010 RISE Fashion Show, Saturday October 16, 6:30pm, Pawtucket Armory, 172 Exchange St, Pawtucket. Tickets are $75 for Reserved Seating (two for $125), $125 for Premiere Seating, or Couture Seating, $1,000 for a four-top cocktail table with beverage service. For more information call 421-2010. For more information on RISE, go here.
